It’s blockbuster time at the museums. The MoMA’s contribution is a large-scale exhibition of the work of Martin Kippenberger. This well-received show “includes key selections and bodies of work from his entire career: paintings, sculpture, works on paper, installations, multiples, photographs, posters, announcement cards, books, and music. ” Kippenberger might not be a household name, but he should be. And this will help.

Protect Protect focuses on the work of Jenny Holzer since the 1990s. Her “pioneering approach to language as a carrier of content and her use of nontraditional media and public settings as vehicles for that content make her one of the most interesting and significant artists working today.” This is truly a fine show put on by the Whitney.

Clytie Alexander has a beautiful show at Betty Cuningham that should be experienced. Her subtle pieces work well with the space, and create an inviting, peaceful environment. Hers is a serene type of power.

Rudolf Stingel is one of the greatest living painters. In the past his work “has taken aim at the transcendental ambitions and metaphysical loftiness of various moments from the history of art.” His new show at Paula Cooper furthers this by deepening “his exploration of portraiture to present a series of new paintings that constitute a kind of cultural self-portrait.” Very timely.

Tehching Hsieh is everywhere these days. Which is a good thing. The MoMA’s inaugural installation of performance pieces features the first of his five One Year Performances. For a nice history lesson read an interview he gave to the Brooklyn Rail in 2003.

For a new ad campaign the MoMA has installed replicas of its most famous works at Brooklyn’s Atlantic Avenue/ Pacific Street subway station. Every ad space in the two connected stations are covered with pieces by Picasso, Matisse, Hopper, Sherman and Dumas. Interesting that they chose a location so close to the Brooklyn Museum.
Art:Raw, a new gallery in Chelsea, recently opened with its inaugural exhibit. The group show features over 300 artists in all mediums, and will run through most of March.
